Massawepie Mire

We had a nice hike this morning through land owned by the Boy Scouts in the area of Massawepie Lake.  We took trails we had never been on before and ended at an overlook at the edge of Massawepie Mire, a very neat bog.

It looks as though you can get farther on the bog if you drive south, so I'm determined to do that before the scouts arrive.

It was very warm, in the 80's for the second day in a row, and the deer flies were already out, in addition to black flies and lots of mosquitoes.

After the hike we went to Raquette River Brewery for lunch.

Memorial Day

We did the traditional Memorial Day paddle then picnic with our friends today.  The paddle was on Deer River Flow.  Despite an iffy weather forecast, the weather was beautiful all day.  The Flow is a pretty place to paddle, but not very large.

We paddled to the dam where we took out for an early lunch.  The river beyond the dam is very picturesque.

Then we returned to the put-in where someone decided the beavers also need access to TV.

At Camp

We drove to camp on Wednesday, May 16.  We have spent the time working around camp and did a short, windy paddle on the Flow.  So nothing worth blogging about.  Today we took the bikes to Fish Creek and did one circuit.  The weather has been great.  The black flies are out and are just starting to bite.

Quilt #55

I just realized I never posted a photo of the quilt I made for my grandson for last Christmas.

Quilt 54

This quilt is a reduced version of "Northern Neighbors" by Deb Tucker, done without using any of her rulers.

Quilt #53

This is based on Ricky Tim's technique in his "Kool Kaleidoscope Quilts."

Another NJSO Concert

Last evening we drove to NJPAC in Newark because we didn't want to miss Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto, and an evening concert was the only option.  We were surprised how little traffic there was.  Much better than Sunday afternoon.
Violinist Ning Feng was fantastic.  Then as an encore he played a mind-bending Paganini Caprice.  We also heard

  • Fagerlund - Isola, which was interesting
  • Sibelius - Symphony No 5, which was not so interesting
