And Yet More Music

We drove to Princeton to hear the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.  They played

  • Tchaikovsky - 1812 Overture
  • Roldan - Tres Pequenos Poemas
  • Grieg - Piano Concerto in A minor played by Yekwon Sunwoo; he played a Liszt sonata as an encore
  • Beethoven - Symphony No. 7
Then they played a couple of encores with a decidedly Cuban beat that were lots of fun.

More Music

We drove to Newark again today for another terrific concert.  This one was Joshua Bell and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields.  I love the chamber orchestra, with fewer strings that allows the woodwinds to stand out.  They played

  • Mendelssohn - A Midsummer Night's Dream Overture
  • Edgar Meyer - Overture for Violin and Orchestra
  • Henryk Wieniawski - Violin Concerto No. 2 - I couldn't have told you I knew this composer but the piece was familiar
  • Beethoven - Symphony No. 6

A Wonderful Day of Music

We went to two concerts today.  This afternoon we drove to NJPAC in Newark to hear the NJSO and Montclair State University Singers.

  • Mozart - "Ave verum corpus"
  • Rheinberger - "Abendlied" for a cappella chorus
  • Ben Parry - "Flame" for a appella chorus, a very moving piece.
  • Mozart - "Requiem"
Then this evening we drove to Princeton to hear Tenebrae.  They sang

  • Owain Park's "Footsteps", sung along with ensembles from the Princeton University Glee Club and Morse Chorale
  • Joby Talbot's "Path of Miracles"- a truly wonderful piece where they made excellent use of the acoustics in Princeton's chapel.
