Hawaii Day 10 - Hiking the Na Pali Coast

This morning we waited for the morning showers to abate somewhat then headed to the end of the road at Ke'e Beach.  It was already so crowded we had to park in an overflow lot.  We were there to hike the Napali Coast trail - 2 miles to the beach then return.
I love this view of the reef from up the trail.
And the view of the coastline.
We did encounter some showers and the trail was very slippery in spots.
Along the way we saw these orchids
and a neat lizard.
The stream that you have to cross to get to the beach was very high, which we should have realized given all the rain we have been having.  So we did not make it to the beach.

Hawaii Day 9 - Hanalei

We drove to Hanalei for breakfast and then to Princeville to grocery shop.  This afternoon we walked on the beach,

including watching crabs excavate their burrows.
Here is a nice view of Hanalei Colony from the beach.

Hawaii Day 8 - To Hanalei

This morning we drove north, headed for our final lodgings at Hanalei Colony Resort, where we have stayed several times.  We stopped along the way at the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge where we saw tropicbirds, frigate birds, and albatross.

We even saw nene in the parking lot.
The setting of our oceanfront condo is very nice.  This is the view from the lanai.

Hawaii Day 7 - Waimea Canyon and Kokee

This morning we drove up Route 550 to see Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park.  We had hoped to hike but there had been so much rain the trails were very slippery.  This neat falls was by the side of the road.
We had great views into the canyon

and from Kalalau Lookout in Kokee.
Back at the cottage we explored the grounds.  This time the mangos we found were still on the trees.
And the plumeria is beautiful.
We walked a bit on the black sand beach at the edge of the property.

Hawaii Day 6 - To Kauai

We packed up the car and started the drive back to the airport, stopping along the way to walk along the shore at Waianapanapa State Park.

Then onto a colorful Hawaiian Airlines plane for a quick flight to Kauai.
We are spending the next two nights at Waimea Plantation Cottages.

Hawaii Day 5 - Hana

Our accommodations at the Hana Kai Maui are okay though a little crowded for three people, but in a great location on the black sand beach.
We had a nice sunrise to start the day.
This morning we walked along the beach as far as we could.  We thought we could continue along the path around the headland but it had become overgrown.
This afternoon we continued on the road past Hana with more waterfalls along the way.
We drove to the Kipahulu District of Haleakala National Park and walked the trail towards the falls.  We didn't go the whole way but did hike about 3.5 miles round trip.  We smelled rotting fruit along the drive and discovered what it was when we started hiking - there were rotten mangos everywhere.
This banyan was on the path.
And of course there were several waterfalls.

Hawaii Day 4 - Road to Hana

You can always count on waterfall sightings on the road to Hana.
And lots of beautiful tropical flowers.

Hawaii Day 3

This morning we drove to the harbor and boarded the Four Winds II boat headed for snorkeling at Molokini.  It was very rough, both for the ride out and for snorkeling.  I rented a wet suit top and the cold did not bother me.  But I got very tired of being buffeted by the waves.  We stopped on the way back to the condo to get shave ice from Ululani's north of Kihei.  Yum.

Hawaii Day 2

We drove up Haleakala early this morning to see the sunrise.  It wasn't terribly spectacular.
There were lots of beautiful silverswords around.
We walked a bit down Sliding Sands trail and were fascinated by the ice crystals underfoot.  The ground apparently freezes every night then thaws again when the sun comes out.
We drove back down the mountain, stopping at a couple of lookouts with neat views into the crater, and getting a late breakfast at Kula Lodge.

Hawaii

We arrived in Maui late yesterday.  We are very happy with our lodgings at Makena Surf - Room E302.  These are some views from and of the condo and the beach we overlook.
