More on Caneel Vacation

Here are some notes that will be useful the next time we go to Caneel.

Our trip was April 21-25, which was a good length. We stayed in Room 137, which was very nice. It is up on the hill and is very quiet and very large. We took wet suits but fortunately didn't need them. The water was cool when we got in but we quickly got used to it. But according to the fellow who took us on the snorkeling tour, the seas had just recently calmed down and the temperature was quickly rising. If we had gone earlier, it would not have been so pleasant. It would probably be safer to wait until the first week of May. There was a carnival just starting in St. Thomas when we left, so that time should definitely be avoided. And speaking of the snorkel trip, it was definitely not worth it. The guy who led it just drove the boat, and not very expertly at that. There was no attempt to discuss what we were seeing. We missed Lucy.

The resort supplied that following:
swim towels, snorkel gear (I'd probably continue to take snorkel and goggles, but maybe not fins), bug spray.

I had hoped to go sea kayaking but they don't allow the kayaks out of the bay at Caneel Beach, so it is definitely not worth it.

The snorkeling was not great. There is a lot of damage to the large coral. But we did see lots of sea turtles.

We did not take a meal plan, and that was the correct decision. Even including a big buffet the first night, it was cheaper to pay as you go. We enjoyed eating at the Equator Restaurant in an old sugar mill. It hadn't been open the previous times we'd been there.

Vacationing at Caneel Bay

Eat, rest, snorkel, eat, rest, snorkel, eat, sleep - repeat. Now that's a vacation. More later ....

Trip to Oregon

Just a note to record the fact that S and I went to Oregon to see my folks April 10-14. We flew Northwest through Minneapolis, chosen by schedule and price. But due to various delays we did not get to Corvallis until very late, which made the jet lag even worse. It seems an early morning flight is probably better.

April Fools

I guess I've never listened to NPR on April 1st before. I'm spending much of the day quilting and was looking forward to a day of my favorite NPR shows. There were some very clever segments that were clearly April Fools nonsense. But then I began to question every story and wonder if it were true. It is amazing how nonsensical some of the true news stories are. It finally became too much for my poor brain and I switched to a music station.
