Hill and Hollow Concert

I just returned from a wonderful concert at the Saranac United Methodist Church.  It was worth the 1 1/3 hour drive each way.  The players were the Olympus Piano Trio, who had spent the last week doing concentrated rehearsing as part of the Hill and Hollow program.  The program included

  • Rachmaninoff Trio No 1 in G Minor
  • Brahms Trio No 2 in C Major
  • Tchaikovsky Piano Trio in A Minor

New Jersey Visit

We just returned from a week in New Jersey.  The weather was incredibly hot, with heat index over 100 nearly every day.  So we didn't do much outdoors.  This was also partly because I have a torn meniscus in my right knee.  I think I did it several weeks ago when I was climbing around on Bluff Island.  I saw the doctor when I was in NJ and he diagnosed it.  I start physical therapy tomorrow.  Sigh.

Paddling the Cedar River

We did a nice 11 mile paddle today.  We put in at Wakeley Dam and paddled down Cedar River Flow.

As usual, it took some exploring and backtracking to find the entrance to the river.  But it was worth it on such a beautiful day.  We paddled down to the lean-to for lunch, carrying around a big beaver dam which we managed to ride over on the way back.

On our way back down the flow we explored Buell Brook, which we had never done before, and got farther upstream than we expected given the relatively low water.  As you can tell from the photo, the clouds were moving in by then and they were welcome since it was about 80 degrees.

Lake Placid Sinfonietta - Concert 4

Last evening's concert was great.

  • An excerpt from "Acis and Galatea" by Handel and sung by Hannah Harrow, the daughter of Anne Harrow, the Sinfonietta's fabulous flautist
  • Die Tageszeiten by Telemann
  • Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by Mozart
The second half consisted of pieces written or orchestrated in 1917, the year the Sinfonietta was founded.  These have been recorded and will be released as part of the Sinfonietta's 100th birthday celebration next year.
  • Ancient Airs and Dances Suite I by Respighi
  • Romanian Folk Dances by Bartok
  • Le Tombeau de Couperin by Ravel
